Hurricane Matthew Relief is underway

survival hints

Following the devastating October 4th Hurricane Matthew impacts, hurricane matthew relief has begun. Many areas are still suffering from flooding and landslides as a result of the hurricane's impact.

The hurricane, which began as a tropical storm early September, strengthened to become a Category 5 hurricane late Sept. 30, and it became the first Atlantic hurricane to make landfall since Hurricane Felix in 2007.

Many organizations launched relief efforts to assist the affected states and countries in the Caribbean. These organizations bring water, food and shelter to all those who were affected by the hurricane.

Direct Relief (a US-based, non-profit organization), and Catholic Relief Services is one example of such organizations. They have both sent emergency response teams to Haiti and are coordinating aid shipments of basic medicine and relief supplies to support victims.

CARE International, a US based nonprofit organization is also supporting hurricane matthew aid. They are coordinating the delivery of clean drinking water, hygiene kit, and other emergency supplies to people affected by the hurricane.

CARE has also distributed emergency cholera vaccines, antibiotics, along with other medications, to combat the outbreak. These supplies will be shipped via airlift from the United States.

The United Nations estimates there are approximately 1.4 million Haitians who need help. And it is possible that this number will rise. With the destruction of water and sanitation facilities, there is an increased chance of cholera as well as other diseases such HIV/AIDS.

There are several ways to help hurricane matthew relief efforts. You can do so through your local American Red Cross chapter, or via the American Red Cross' online store. Some retailers are also offering specials on certain items, such as clothing or toys, that can be donated to hurricane matthew victims.

Publix Super Markets Charities will also donate $1 million to the American Red Cross in Hurricane Matthew relief. Customers can donate $1 by adding a dollar amount at checkout to their grocery bills.

A number of North Carolina communities still have to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, including flood damage and other issues. Lumberton and Nichols are two examples of communities that were affected by floodwaters.

Large-scale flooding was caused by Hurricane Ike in large parts of the state, especially the coastal areas. Flood damage has been reported in some counties inland.

Over 18 counties now have Long Term Relief Groups, which are comprised of local leaders representing service agencies, volunteer group and faith-based groups. They help to address the unique concerns that were caused by the storm.

These groups collaborate with FEMA and the state government to help identify and address needs and to provide resources for those affected by hurricanes.

Through improved coordination and communication, these groups aim to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of emergency response. They also educate local communities about how to better prepare for future disasters.

How to Navigate with or Without a Compass

Although a compass does not tell you where you're going, it can help you get back to your home in case you lose your bearings.

There are three ways to navigate:

  1. By landmarks
  2. Use a compass to find magnetic North
  3. By stars

These are objects you recognize immediately when you come across them. They include trees, buildings, rivers, etc. Landmarks are useful because they provide a visual clue to where you are.

Magnetic North simply indicates the direction in which Earth's magnetic field points. When you look up at the sky, you'll notice that the sun appears to be moving across the sky. The earth's magnetic field actually causes sun to move around. Even though it seems like the sun is moving across a skyline, it actually moves around horizons. At noon the sun is directly overhead. At midnight, the sun will be directly below you. The magnetic field on the earth changes daily, so the direction of the North pole's magnetic North pole can change every day. This can mean that you could be off track for a few days.

Another method of navigating is using stars. Stars appear over the horizon to rise and lower. These are fixed points in space that you can use to determine your location relative to other locations.

Statistics

  • We know you're not always going to be 100% prepared for the situations that befall you, but you can still try and do your best to mitigate the worst circumstances by preparing for a number of contingencies. (hiconsumption.com)
  • In November of 1755, an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 6.0 and a maximum intensity of VIII occurred about 50 miles northeast of Boston, Massachusetts. (usgs.gov)
  • Without one, your head and neck can radiate up to 40 percent of your body heat. (dec.ny.gov)
  • The downside to this type of shelter is that it does not generally offer 360 degrees of protection and unless you are diligent in your build or have some kind of tarp or trash bags, it will likely not be very resistant to water. (hiconsumption.com)

How To

How to build a fish trap for survival

A fishtrap is a device to catch fish. It is made up of two parallel bars, the "trays", that form a funnel-shaped shape. The water flows to one trap end. It then collects at bottom of the first tray. The water level rises as a result. As the water level rises higher, it will fall through the second bar allowing the trapped fish escape.

Fish traps have been used since ancient times to catch salmon. They still work today, but now they're also used to catch many types of freshwater catfish, such as bass and carp.

If you have access to enough water, it is possible to make your own fish trap. To line the trap's interior, you will need some type of material. A commercial fish trap kits can be bought online if you don’t have much space. These kits typically include everything you need, except the materials needed to build the trap.

If you do decide to make your own fish trap, here are some things to keep in mind when building it:

  • To prevent water from leaking through the trap's sides, ensure they are strong.
  • Make sure you choose a location that is well-lit so the sun can warm the water.
  • For the trap's bottom, use a smooth surface such as concrete or stone. Sand and gravel particles tend to gravitate to rough surfaces.
  • The trap should be free of all debris to ensure the fish aren't caught.

Once you have built the fish trap, place it near the edge. If the fish escape, don't panic. The trap should be left alone for a few more days to allow them to return in. There's no need to clean the trap because it should stay wet. You can later remove any dead fish that are found in the pond.
