What is the difference between a folding knife and a fixed-blade knife?

Folding knives are designed to fold compactly to fit inside a pocket or backpack. The blade folds away when not in use.

Fixed-bladed knives are designed to remain fixed during normal use. They have longer blades than those of folding knives.

Fixed-blade knives have a greater durability, but are also more portable.

How to Navigate Without a Compass, or with it?

Although a compass does not tell you where you're going, it can help you get back to your home in case you lose your bearings.

There are three options for navigation:

  1. By landmarks
  2. Magnetic North (using a compasse)
  3. By stars

These are objects you recognize immediately when you come across them. These can be trees, buildings, rivers, and so on. Landmarks can be useful because they are a visual indicator of where you're at.

Magnetic North simply refers to the direction that the Earth's magnet field points. If you look at the sky, the sun appears like it's moving across the sky. However, the earth’s magnetic field actually causes it to move around the Earth. So, while the sun seems to move across the sky, it really moves around the horizon. At noon, the sun is directly overhead. At midnight, the sun is directly below you. The earth's magnetic field is constantly changing, so the exact direction of the magnetic North pole changes every day. This means you might be off the course by quite a bit during a single day.

Stars are another method for navigating. Stars appear as if they rise and fall over the horizon. These are fixed points in time that you can use for determining your location relative others.
